It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks that you need to complete at work, so it’s refreshing to take a brief step back to get re-energized.
Nine team members from Ohio Basement Authority and our sister company Florida Foundation Authority recently attended the CN Live ’18 Convention. The event was held from Sept. 16-18 in Hartford and Seymour, CT, by Contractor Nation. Contractor Nation is a network of subsidiary companies that provides support like tools and training to dealers such as Ohio Basement Authority and Florida Foundation Authority.
While this gathering of more than 1,200 attendees from hundreds of companies across North America only lasted a few days, it was packed with information, inspiration, networking opportunities and entertainment. Convention is an opportunity to learn and grow, and to find additional ways to challenge yourself in your company role. It also gave our attending teammates a chance to get to know each other better and bounce ideas off of one another.
The theme of this year’s Convention was “Live," featuring a live flash mob entering an awards ceremony, dealers sharing their success stories and advice during the general session, and more interaction during departmental classes. There also was an underlying theme of unity and a sense of “we’re all in this together.”
Along with presentations from Contractor Nation Founder and CEO Larry Janesky and other department heads, other motivational guest speakers were also featured.
One night we heard from Kat Cole, the group president of Focus Brands, which manages subsidiaries like Auntie Anne’s and Cinnabon. She talked about her humble beginnings, working her way up with dedication and perseverance, and championing leadership by always doing the right thing. It was rewarding to see someone who came from practically nothing, who is now a successful female leader setting an example for businessmen and women alike.
Another night we laughed and cried along with retired United States Army SSG Travis Mills who lost portions of his arms and legs from an IED while serving in Afghanistan. It’s safe to say everyone in attendance was impacted by his infectious smile, sense of humor, and unwavering positive attitude about life.
Ohio Basement Authority also was recognized several times throughout the event. We were awarded as the No. 16 dealer for total CleanSpace crawl space encapsulation sales, as well as installing one million square feet of CleanSpace; and the No. 9 dealer for total sales of Basement Systems waterproofing products, as well as 25 miles of waterproofing products installed. In the style of high school superlatives, we also took home the Class Brain award for the Best Product/Services Blogs on our website. Our social media posts were used as outstanding examples in the marketing classes, Foreman Eric Estell won a concrete bucket challenge in a production department session, and General Manager John Becker spoke about leadership in our Ohio and Florida companies during the general session and a hiring class.
The trip ended with a Star Wars themed party that even had Chewbacca and Darth Vader up and dancing with everyone.
This was the fourth Convention I have attended, and I always walk away with valuable information and ideas. It is a blessing to work for a company that invests in its employees with opportunities to travel and expand our knowledge. And we all greatly appreciate the support and opportunities from our friends at Contractor Nation! We can’t wait to see you next year!
