In everything she does, Jennie Mason strives to always provide remarkable experiences.
When Jennie saw a man struggling with bags filled to the brim with clothing essentials, she didn’t hesitate to jump to his aid. Drawing on her past retail experience, Jennie helped the man, a veteran, pack the bags so they would be easier to carry.
This veteran was one of the many that Jennie assisted this week. She took a few hours out of her normal workday to join several fellow Ohio Basement Authority teammates in volunteering at the Central Ohio Veterans Stand Down.
In its 24th year, Stand Down was held Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The event featured various services to assist veterans in need including food, housing, clothing, legal aid, medical check-ups, haircuts, and employment. The number of service providers more than doubled this year to lend much-needed help to more than 500 attending veterans.
This was the fourth year Ohio Basement Authority has had a team of volunteers at the event, always ready to jump in and assist where needed. Operations Support Lead Megan Pettry and External Marketing Coordinator Jacalyn Brown stepped up their involvement this year to serve as chairs on the planning committee.
Jennie, one of our Customer Care Representatives, was excited to take part of this volunteer effort for the first time.
“I’ve never worked for a company that does a lot of community work like we do,” she said. “It’s all about what we give. It’s more rewarding than the paychecks.”
To start the day off, our group was stationed in the clothing and personal essentials section, then we spent the rest of the day serving food to veterans and guests.
There were a few new additions to the “one stop shop” such as academic opportunities and a mini job fair. Layne Schoener, our Cultural Ambassador, said she enjoyed networking with an array of people as a featured job fair vendor.
The day was an eye-opening experience for Customer Care Representative Makensie Andrews, as well.
“I didn’t realize how many services were covered,” she said. “And it was good to see that we all enjoyed being there, that we really cared.”
“We had a great group of people that brought the same attitude – a positive, one team experience and WOW customer service,” Jennie added. “I felt good, thankful and blessed today, that we were giving back a little something to the veterans. They seemed to like our conversations and smiles just as much as the essential items we provided.”
