Ohio Basement Authority Case Studies: Permanently Reinforcing a Cracking, Tilting Wall with Carbon Fiber in Athens, OH

Challenge

During the 18 years that he has lived in his house, a homeowner in Athens, OH, has been keeping an eye on some structural issues he noticed. One of the foundation walls had a long horizontal crack running almost the entire width of the wall. The wall also appeared to be slightly tilting inward.

These are common signs of foundation wall failure, but it is important to address them right away before any serious damage results. As he witnessed the cracking only getting worse over time, the homeowner was motivated to address the problems once and for all. Not only was he worried about the structural integrity of the house, but the future resale value of the structure.

The homeowner began to research how to best address these structural issues and he found information about Ohio Basement Authority online. He was then eager to contact us to learn more about how we could help him. He met with Danny Pease, and Danny completed a thorough evaluation of the foundation wall’s condition. After discussing the homeowner’s goals, Danny presented the homeowner with one type of our many reliable foundation repair solutions.

Solution

Per Danny’s recommendations, one of our crews, led by Foreman Martimiano Alonso, installed several Carbon Fiber supports on the problematic foundation wall. These durable supports not only permanently reinforce the wall where they are installed, but they also prevent the wall from any further cracking or inward bowing.

The first step in installing these supports involves sanding down sections of the wall where the strips will be installed. This ensures the wall will be clean so the strips can properly adhere to the wall. Holes are then knocked into the wall, usually near the bottom of the wall or third course of the concrete block. Pieces of rebar, or reinforcing steel, are then placed inside the holes to help anchor the wall. The holes are then sealed with concrete.

Strong epoxy resin is then applied to the wall and the Carbon Fiber strips. Small steel brackets are attached to the sill plate on the top of the wall to anchor the Carbon Fiber supports. Another coat of epoxy resin is applied to the straps to seal them against the wall.

Even though Carbon Fiber supports don’t appear aesthetically pleasing, these durable supports can easily be concealed with paint, drywall or other basement finishing materials.

The homeowner now has peace of mind knowing this trustworthy repair method was used to help him create a safe and stable living environment.
